Atlassian: from 'Products' to 'Apps', vision or error?

During the event Team ’25, Atlassian announced many powerful new features… but there is one that has gone somewhat unnoticed and, nevertheless, affects all of us who use their suite daily: the change of terminology in the administration panel, moving from referring to 'Products' to calling them 'Apps'.

🧭 What has changed exactly?

In the interface of Atlassian Administration, now we are starting to see these adjustments:

      • The menu 'Products' will be renamed. 'Apps'

      • The pages and URLs also change: from /products to /apps

      • The roles of 'Product admin' are now 'App admin' (although the permissions remain the same)

      • The updates are called 'App updates' instead of 'Product updates'.

And this, although it seems minor... it has caught us a bit by surprise 😅

🤔 And what does this contribute?

Officially, Atlassian explains it like this:

"We are moving away from the vision of independent products and betting on a unified suite of apps, powered by a common platform that enables the application of AI, search, and analytics across all data."

It makes sense from a strategic perspective: it is becoming increasingly clear that Atlassian is not just Jira or Confluence, but a comprehensive platform for collaborative work, with many connected layers (Cloud, AI, automations, integrations…).

    🧠 Our opinion from Quabu

In Quabu we have been implementing and maintaining instances of Jira, Confluence, JSM and many other Atlassian tools for years. And if there is one thing we have learned, it is that the changes of nomenclature in such a widely used tool they are not innocent.

📌On one hand, we believe that this change adds some complexity in the short term. There are still companies adapting to the concepts of organisation, instance and product, and now a new layer of vocabulary is being introduced. This can create confusion, especially in training, documentation and shared roles.

🔎 On the other hand, We can clearly see that it responds to the accelerated growth of the Atlassian suite.Changing 'product' to 'app' can help build a new narrative: one in which Atlassian positions itself as the backbone of digital teamwork., integrando sus propias herramientas y conectándose con muchas otras desde el Marketplace o APIs.

If that is the goal, then It makes sense to prepare the ground with this change. It may seem like a nuance, but nuances matter when you want to position yourself as the central platform for business collaboration.

    ✅ What should you do?

For the moment, Nothing changes in practice.Your permissions are still functioning the same. However, we do recommend:

        • Inform your management team of the change.

        • Start adapting your documentation and presentations.

        • Keep an eye out for new messages, emails or logs where the word 'Apps' starts to appear.

From Quabu we keep you updated and help you navigate all these changes (of names... and of funds!).

Because understanding how tools are transformed is key to making better use of them.
